Menotti wrote his most haunting and beautiful music for this tale of desperate revolutionaries and refugees at the mercy of a faceless bureaucracy. His only full-length opera, The Consul premiered on Broadway in 1950, winning the Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Award. GHP joins the music world in celebrating Menotti's 90th birthday in 2001.
