Goat Hall Productions and I have taken a year off. I had both knees replaced but am now, happily, able to get around with much greater ease! We’ve done a little surgery on Goat Hall as well: we’ve cleared out all past debts from previous seasons, we’ve established a new—and very enthusiastic—Board of Directors, and are reorganizing staff and functions to make Goat Hall a more efficient, cost-effective, and artistically creative production company.
We have already planned our 2011-2012 Season and are mailing out our first brochure. You will receive it in a day or so. Our first production will be The Kurt Weill Project: Moon Floating on Water. We are already trialing the production in small venues and getting an enthusiastic reception. A critic for the San Francisco Bay Guardian wrote of our recent performance, “....presented as part of Stage Werx Theatre’s new music series, Underground Sound, the Weill Project set the bar high for shows to come, and is an ensemble to watch out for.” As you’ll see when you receive the brochure, there are already performances scheduled for Café Royale on August 31 and Revolution Café on October 15.
The 2011-2012 season will also include a production of Kurt Weill’s Happy End, two Fresh Voices festivals, and Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte. We would really like to assure that Moon Floating on Water and the upcoming productions can be performed at full theatrical venues rather than in smaller casual settings. The café settings are wonderful for trialing a show but they don’t allow us to sell tickets or to perform for larger audiences, hurting both our income and our exposure.
With many thanks to our generous donors over the past few years, we hope many of you will be able to help us once again. We need to build up our production funding account. We have already received a small grant for this season from the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation and we are preparing proposals for other arts funding organizations as well. But if we are to operate on a sounder financial footing with the funds necessary for each production before the production starts, we must rely on the generosity of our supporters to help us supplement a very tight budget.
Everyone’s generosity and thoughtfulness in the past have meant a lot to us and have enabled us to accomplish a lot on a shoestring budget. Thanks to all of you for anything you can do on our account.
We would love to see you at one of our upcoming shows and, as always, would appreciate any feedback and thoughts you might have.
Gratefully yours,
Harriet March Page
